Wolfgang Lüftner was born in the Sudetenland in 1943 and moved to Augsburg with his family at the end of the war. After finishing school, he trained as a graphic designer and then studied fine art in Munich.

His career initially took the passionate hiker to the graphics departments of several Swabian building societies before he was appointed Professor of Typography, Design and Photography in the Advertising programme at the Fachhochschule für Druck Stuttgart in 1985. Over the course of his 22 years of service, in addition to his teaching activities, he supported many trade fair presentations for various degree programmes and organised more than half a dozen creative excursions to Italy.

Even during his professional career in Stuttgart, Lüftner was active as a local councillor in his home community of Eberstadt (Heilbronn district) and organised a number of local art events, among other things. He was also involved in local environmental protection and nature conservation.

Wolfgang Lüftner died in Heilbronn on 20 August 2025 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, three children and six grandchildren.
